The story of a great wine

For nearly two millennia, exceptional wines have been made on the schist hillsides of the Douro Valley. Port wine is more than just a gift of nature. In its very essence, in its historic density, it contains an entire cultural heritage, full of experience, knowledge, and skill that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Port was once vital to Portugal’s economy and still serves as a national symbol throughout the world. Wine vats and amphorae dating back to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD have been found all around the Douro region.
However, it was not until the second half of the 17th century, as winemaking took off in the Douro and the wine trade quickly developed, that the name ‘port wine’ was first used. In September 1756, the Douro Wine Company was founded, for the purpose of ensuring product quality (preventing fraud, fixing prices) according to the land registry.

Only one place in the world can produce port, and that is the Douro Valley, in Northern Portugal. The Douro River is getting busy, and the Douro valley is bustling with activity. This spectacular region follows the meandering Douro River for 120 km, from the Spanish border to the Atlantic Ocean. Work is multiplying everywhere in the villages and vineyards. The scale of this work is often immense: hills and mountains split open by Man, as part of the redevelopment of the vineyards. Projects of titanic proportions can be seen, where Man moulds nature as required to take advantage of its essential characteristics.

The masons are raising up centuries-old schist walls, the winegrowers are planting vines, brand-new vats are being installed, and quintas are being restored Our vineyard consists exclusively of A-rated vines in the Cima Corgo, around Pinhão, and in the Upper Douro, on either side of Barca d’Alva. This part of the world has now joined the third millennium. A key player in the region, Rozès plants its vines along the entire river. With over 300 hectares and a vine rehabilitation programme covering at least 10 hectares per year, the Rozès House preserves the future of port. 


La Quinta de Monsul

Coming up on the road from Oporto, the last downhill stretch gives a spectacular view of the Douro. On the river’s right bank stands Regua, the administrative capital of the port wine trade and the heart and soul of the winemaking valley. The left bank is home to La Quinta de Monsul, the heart of Rozès’ properties. This winemaking estate was built in last century in the great tradition of port wines, with exceptional granite lagares—the vats used to stomp great vintages—and modern automated presses that ensure top must quality.

After harvesting, fermentation, resting, blending, and bottling are done at La Quinta de Monsul. The grapes are selected from the best soils in the Douro Valley. Rozès’ reputation is based on our constant concern for expressing the full intensity, richness and complexity of our wines, which are produced from the oldest AOC in the world. In the heart of a sea of vines, La Quinta de Monsul and its outbuildings give our Ports all the quality and traceability of great 20th- and 21st-century wines. 


The international Douro natural park, Terras Do Grifo

The International Douro Natural Park is an exceptional site for fauna and flora, and the Terras do Grifo vineyard is situated in the heart of this amazing region. 
Located at the foot of these magnificent vineyards with evocative names such as Canameira or Anibal, the Douro River proudly flows and the sky is reflected this mirror of calm water.
The silence reflects bygone times and faraway cultures and only the nose dives and cries of birds of prey indicate that life exists and that it is protected so that future generations can contemplate the rare species that still live in an ideal ecosystem.
