Pommery #

When Madame Pommery took over the Maison after the death of her husband in 1858, she considerably developed the champagne Maison outside France, more particularly in the United Kingdom. Madame Pommery had understood as nobody else that the creative spirit in making champagne wine finds its corollary in the approach of the artists she was close to.

This is why she invited numerous artists to work at the Domaine like Gustave Navlet or Emile Gallé and collected works of art she offered to the Museum of Fine Arts in Reims, and which constitute together with those of Henry Vasnier, the core of the museum’s collection. The quintessence of the Pommery collection was the purchasing at an auction of the “The Gleaners” by J.F. Millet in 1888, which is today a master work at the Musée d’Orsay.

By referring both to the art of making champagne and pictorial masterworks, the Vranken-Pommery Art Collection, initiated in 2003, is still driven by the spirit of Madame Pommery.
